Domestic Violence and Abuse

If you are a victim of violence at the hands of someone you know where love whether the abuser is a current spouse,  boyfriend or girlfriend,  a family member and acquaintance, or stranger you are not alone. Unfortunately, domestic violence and abuse are common in today's world and must be taken very seriously. You did not cause the abuse to occur and you are not responsible for the violent behavior of someone else. Abuse by anyone, whether it be emotional, verbal, physical or sexual is always wrong and should never be tolerated. Most often, women are the victims of domestic abuse. One in four women report they have been physically assaulted or raped by an intimate partner. The consequences of intimate partner violence can be devastating. Physical and emotional trauma can lead to increased stress, depression, lowered self-esteem and post dramatic stress disorder. Make sure you and your children are safe. Reach out for support and help from your family members, friends, or community organizations.

If you or someone you know is experiencing or is in someway involved in domestic violence, please recognize there are measures to take in order to prevent further harm to you and your family. We strongly urge you to devise a safety plan for a time extreme emergency. A list of domestic shelters is contained elsewhere in this handout, and here are more resources:
